The AMC Javelin-From Pony Car to Cop Car

The year was 1968 when American Motors officially entered the Pony car market. Following on the heels of the successful Ford Mustang, American Motors’ Javelin served as the company’s entrant. The american public was challenged to “Test Drag” the AMC Javelin and compare it to the Mustang. Not literally of course, because this hot rod was faster than it looked.

When it was equipped with a 343 280 HP 4 barrel V8, and a 4 speed manual transmission with a 3.54 rear axle, it could move from a standstill to 60 in 7.8 seconds. The SST AMC Javelin in stock equipment could cover a quarter mile in 16.8. Talk about whiplash!

But thats only where performance started. The real surprise was the handling capability. With a larger diameter sway bars and special handling suspension kept this hot rod on the road.

In the fall of 1968, Popular Science wrote that ” The Javelin reacts almost the same at high speed as it does during low speed maneuvers. Made nice tight turns and easy driving. Fast or slow.

As the winner of Trans-Am race series in 1971, 1972, and 1976, the second-generation AMX variant was the first pony car to be used as a standard vehicle for highway patrol duties.

The AMC Javelin was produced as a First Generation Base Coupe and SST Coupe from 1968 -1970. The Second Generation was built from 1971-1974 with tweaks and upgrades along the way. Then American Motors introduced the AMX Series.

Equipped with a 390 hp V8 and manual 4 speed transmission, this hybrid AMC Javelin could smoke 0-60 in about 6 seconds flat!
